Stress-driven grain refinement in a microstructurally stable nanocrystalline binary alloy

چکیده

Deformation-induced grain-growth in nanocrystalline materials is a widely-reported phenomenon that has been attributed to grain boundary (GB) processes. In this paper, we report on the opposite phenomenon, wherein stable (NC) Cu-Ta alloy undergoes further refinement of nano-grains during severe plastic deformation (SPD). SPD up 250% results significant grain-size reduction despite 350°C increase temperature caused by process. Experiments and atomistic-simulations show unexpected grain-refinement direct result well-dispersed Ta-nanoclusters throughout centers along GBs acting as kinetic-pinning agents suppressing GB processes occur recrystallization.

Estimation of grain boundary segregation enthalpy and its role in stable nanocrystalline alloy design

Grain boundary segregation provides a method for stabilization of nanocrystalline metals – the selection of an alloying element that will segregate to the boundaries can lower the grain boundary energy, attenuating the driving force for grain growth. The segregation strength, relative to mixing enthalpy, of a binary system determines the propensity for segregation stabilization. This relationsh...

EFFECT OF COOLING RATE AND GRAIN REFINEMENT ON THE MICROSEGREGATION IN Al-4.8 wt.% Cu ALLOY

Microsegregation is one of the most important phenomena occurs during solidification. It usually results in formation of some unexpected second phases which generally affect the mechanical properties and specially reduce the workability of casting products. The aim of this research is to study the effect of cooling rate and grain refinement on the microsegregation in Al-4.8 wt.% Cu. For this p...

The Role of Confinement on Stress-Driven Grain Boundary Motion in Nanocrystalline Aluminum Thin Films

3D molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the role of microstructural confinement on room temperature stress-driven grain boundary (GB) motion for a general population of GBs in nanocrystalline Al thin films. Detailed analysis and comparison with experimental results reveal how coupled GB migration and GB sliding are manifested in realistic nanoscale networks of GBs. The pr...

Linking stress-driven microstructural evolution in nanocrystalline aluminium with grain boundary doping of oxygen.

The large fraction of material residing at grain boundaries in nanocrystalline metals and alloys is responsible for their ultrahigh strength, but also undesirable microstructural instability under thermal and mechanical loads. However, the underlying mechanism of stress-driven microstructural evolution is still poorly understood and precludes rational alloy design. Here we combine quantitative ...
